This website was originally created in 1998 by Peter Oakley as a way of sharing a love of beautiful photographic images and sayings of wisdom down through the ages. The combined words and pictures invite us to pause, reflect, and engage our capacity for introspection and empathy.
Many of the photographic images published here from 1998 through 2010 are being reprised in this newly redesigned website beginning in mid 2022. In addition to Peter Oakley’s collection of images, a new means of production has been employed to speed up the process of creating these Wisdom Road images. In early 2023 we began utilizing ChatGPT to generate commentary and discussion questions, as well as writing descriptions of imagery to accompany each quotation. The descriptions are in turn fed into Stable Diffusion to generate new images, which are then composited with the quotation text and attribution.
As new tools and methods arise we hope to be able to further automate the process of creating daily wisdom in the months and years to come.
